Through the teaching of Geography at Dimple Well Infant School and Nursery we stimulate pupils’ interest in and curiosity about their surroundings. We increase their knowledge and understanding of our ever changing world and encourage pupils to ask questions and propose solutions to some environmental problems. They are able to see how their actions go towards shaping the future. We study local areas and extend these studies into the wider world. The children learn to use maps to locate cities, countries, mountain ranges, rivers, seas and oceans. They use atlases, photos and the internet to explore the environment and way of life for people who live in those countries in which they study. They then use the skills they have developed in literacy, numeracy and computing to report and record their findings. We aim to foster a sense of responsibility for the earth on which they live and its resources. We promote pupils’ creativity through actively encouraging pupils to ask questions in lessons, make connections and provide opportunities for hands-on experimentation and problem solving.
